Sokol GradThe list of classical and medieval sites in the vicinity of Šipovo is long, but one of the most important monuments is Sokol or Sokograd, whose ruins lies southwest of Šipovo. Sokol – which means “falcon’s rock” - was built on steep cliff in the canyon of river Sokočnica. The earliest phase of the town is from first half of XIII century and it consists of yard and watchtower. In the beginning of XIV century to the Lower City is added tower used to protect castle from cannon fire from the west side. In 1463, the last Bosnian King Stephan Tomašević surrendered the town to Turkish Sultan Mehmed the Second. By the end of 15th and beginning of 16th century, Hungarians ruled this region. From 1521 Turkish garrison was installed in this fort. After they left, in 1833, city was left to decay. Today - partly restored - Sokograd is pleasant picnic spot and quiet place for rest. On the south side of the city is spring that never dies and form Sokograd one can enjoy magnificent views of rivers Pliva and Janj. Local mountaineering sport association “Vitorog” has prepared and marked 3 footpaths with different length and difficulties of walking. These attractive footpaths will lead you trough beautiful landscape. Parts of these three routes are visits to the "Sokolačka" Cave and the waterfalls of the River Sokočnica.
